This blend of grapes comes from the benchlands of Cakebread's vineyards in Oakville and Rutherford—including Hill Ranch, which surrounds the Rutherford home of Jack and Dolores Cakebread. Benchlands are the narrow regions that mark the transition from a valley’s floor to steeper mountain slopes. This geographic position offers distinctive soil profiles for good root development, as well as mountain shade that protects grapes from extreme conditions, allowing them to ripen slowly and steadily.

97 pts.- Robert Parker: “One of the great efforts of recent years, and not surprisingly so, is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve, a blend of 81% from Howell Mountain, 11% from St. Helena and the rest Calistoga and Mount Veeder. It is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot aged 20 months in 84% new French oak. At 15.2% natural alcohol, this is a big boy, but also classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with crème de cassis, graphite, licorice, and a touch of spicy oak. Winemaker Laurie Hook, who has since departed as winemaker, really hit a home run with this beauty. The wine could benefit from 7-10 years cellaring and probably last 30 to 40. When all is said and done, this is an instant classic, the wine full-bodied with oodles of crème de cassis, pen ink, graphite and baking spices. It is multi-dimensional, layered, and one of the all-time great Beringer Private Reserves – and there have been many.” 

Winemaker Notes:
The 2013 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is an exceptional expression from one of the best vintages in years. The enticing aromas of ripe blackberry, boysenberry, fresh tobacco, brown spice, and sweet mint are profound in the glass. Dense and well-structured, its supple tannins are complemented by notes of espresso, mocha and balanced with a silky and elegant finish.
Blend: 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot.

2015 Tenuta Sette Ponti Poggio Al Lupo Toscana Red Blend 750ML

Famous for its bold, layered and long-lived red, Brunello di Montalcino, the town of Montalcino is about 70 miles south of Florence, and has a warmer and drier climate than that of its neighbor, Chianti. The Sangiovese grape is king here, as it is in Chianti, but Montalcino has its own clone called Brunello.

The Brunello vineyards of Montalcino blanket the rolling hills surrounding the village and fan out at various elevations, creating the potential for Brunello wines expressing different styles. From the valleys, where deeper deposits of clay are found, come wines typically bolder, more concentrated and rich in opulent black fruit. The hillside vineyards produce wines more concentrated in red fruits and floral aromas; these sites reach up to over 1,600 feet and have shallow soils of rocks and shale.

Brunello di Montalcino by law must be aged a minimum of four years, including two years in barrel before realease and once released, typically needs more time in bottle for its drinking potential to be fully reached. The good news is that Montalcino makes a “baby brother” version. The wines called Rosso di Montalcino are often made from younger vines, aged for about a year before release, offer extraordinary values and are ready to drink young.

This family owned estate in Maremma Toscana began wine production under the leadership of Lorenzo Zonin in 2000. According to the Wine Spectator and
the Wine Advocate, Lorenzo Zonin is making some of the most fascinating wines in Maremma. The property stretches out over 110 acres, 37 acres are planted with vines, 5 acres with olive trees and 50 acres with cereal crops and sunflowers. Amaranto is a shade of red, similar to that of this wine, which takes its name from a scarlet plant that the Ancient Greeks called ‘amarantos’ (‘which doesn’t fade’). It therefore represented all those genuine, sacred and timeless qualities that still permeate land and vines. Podere San Cristoforo is characterized by the constant presence of breezes blowing from the sea, keeping the grapes healthy and moderating the high summer temperatures. These grapes are souced from Marolli vineyard, with a density of 4.850 vines/hectare. The vines are on average 21 years and yield 7 tonnes/hectare.

When Steve Dutton told us in 2005 that he was going to graft 0.7 acres of the very cold Green Valley Vineyard from Pinot Noir to Gewurztraminer, we were thrilled. No varietal is more suited and less planted in the cold nooks of the Green Valley appellation than Gewurztraminer. This varietal shines when it ripens slowly to attain the enticing floral aromatics denoted by an even pink color at harvest. With its super thick skins, it easily weathers difficult times of heat and rain, but requires our long season to give us the ethereal aromatics and juicy freshness that we love in it. The Green Valley Vineyard, situated just along the cold east bank of Atascadero Creek, is a perfect site for this grape. Gewurztraminer literally means "spice Traminer", and it's obvious why when you put your nose in a glass of this offering.

Harrington Wines is a small producer hell bent on bringing to light the obscure, forgotten grapes of California as well as producing clean, stable wines made without sulfites.

The winery was started in 2002 to produce California Pinot Noir. Over the years, a great deal of energy has been spent researching, locating and working with some of California's long-forgotten Pinot Noir vineyards. Ultimately, the vineyard sites chosen are challenging viticulturally, either because of age, climate or terrain. Of these three criteria, older vineyards have become most valued as they have adapted to and been changed by their environs and produce subtle wines more deeply imbued with Pinot's characteristic flavors and aromatics.

Over the past decade, this search for older Pinot Noir vineyards has brought a keen awareness of the forgotten viticultural treasures of California. There are vineyards full of history and potential scattered throughout California and wonderful wines can be made from the rare grape varieties coming from locations other than Napa and Sonoma. So in 2008, the Pinot-only regimen was stretched to include a Nebbiolo from two vineyards located on the limestone ridges of westside Paso Robles.

Domaine Papagiannakos was founded in 1919 and lies just 18 miles outside of Athens in the Attica wine region. Run by Vassilis Papagiannakos, the third generation to run the winery, who has made great strides in modernizing the winemaking techniques while preserving the character and quality of the indigenous grape varieties. The Assyrtiko comes from a northeastern facing vineyard on limestone soils. It is fermented and aged all in stainless steel to preserve the freshness of the variety. Similar to the Assyrtikos of Santorini, this has a lush mouthfeel and wonderfully accompanying acidity.

Tasting Notes:
The Roero Arneis presents a characteristic and captivating straw-yellow color. Its floral and fruity nose is reminiscent of chamomile, apples and bananas. Very dry on the palate with good body and balanced acidity. Ideal as an aperitif, it also pairs well with seafood dishes and vegetables.

Bien Nacido Vineyard is located in the Santa Maria Valley on the South Central Coast of California, just east of Santa Maria.  The topography of the valley features transverse ranges with an east/west orientation, opening up to the Pacific Ocean.  The climate is strongly influenced by the ocean providing ideal temperate growing conditions for Pinot Blanc.  Early spring warming, mild summer temperatures and late arriving cold fall temperatures provide a long growing season for the development of rich color along with concentrated and complex flavors.

True to the varietal, this Pinot Gris is deliciously bright, fresh and crisp. Aromas of pineapple, Meyer lemon and honeysuckle emerge from the glass. The palate showcases luscious flavors of grapefruit, kiwi and lemon zest followed by a bright acidity that lingers on the finish.

Pair with seared scallops in a rich butter sauce, or serve alone as an aperitif.

This wine carries the designation “Terre del Volturno,” referring to the Volturno River, which flows through the Caserta province out to the Mediterranean Sea. This is an IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) designation, which carries fewer prescriptions than a controlled appellation (DOC/AOC/DO, etc.). In this case, it covers a geographic area roughly equivalent to what was once Falernum. Pallagrello, which has both “green” and “black” versions, was often confused with another classic Campanian variety, Coda di Volpe, but with the help of one of the region’s most prominent viticulturists and professors, Luigi Moio, the Vestini Campagnano team—now headed by Alberto Barletta—have put that to rest. The entire Vestini Campagnano project, launched in 1990, is focused on what Barletta and his partners call “viticultural archaeology,” but the wines are modern in every way: This bottling was fermented and then aged in a mixture of French oak barriques and stainless steel for six months, followed by six more months of bottle aging before release.

Grown in clay soils mixed with volcanic sands, this Pallagrello Bianco is considerably more textured than Coda di Volpe, but shares some of the latter’s chalky, smoky minerality. And although there’s no indication of it in any literature we found, the color of this 2017—a deep yellow-gold with flecks of copper—suggests at least some brief contact with the grape skins during the initial fermentation. The aromas are a mix of yellow apple, quince, dried apricot, crushed chalk, dried herbs, a hint of forest floor (like many Campanian whites, there’s a pine-bough green-ness), and a touch of almond skin on the finish. Medium-plus in body, it is deeply mineral and loaded with fresh acidity, lending the wine an intriguing push-pull of viscosity and grip. It is ready to drink now at 45-50 degrees, and a brief 15-30 minute decant certainly wouldn’t hurt. It has a great salinity/savor for Mediterranean seafood preparations like the attached Neapolitan-style scoglio. Killer pasta with seafood, rich and expressive white wine…Italy wins again!
